Highlights consist of selecting thin or thick strands of hair that are then lightened at least 2 shades lighter than the rest of your hair. Highlights should compliment your natural or artificial color.
One misconception of highlighting is that highlights are only blonde in color. This is not true. |
Lowlights consists of taking thin to thick strands of hair and darkening them at least 2 shades darker than the rest of your hair. I recommend adding lowlights every third time you get your hair highlighted. This will help blend your highlights with your natural hair color, and you won't have to run to me with dark roots every six weeks.

Highlights can be any tone or any shade of light or dark. As long as they are lighter than your overall hair color, these are considered highlights. For example: If your hair color is black, and you get dark brown tones put in, those are highlights. If your hair is brown, and you have lighter, caramel tones added, those would be also considered highlights.

Adding both highlights and lowlights is sometimes referred to as a tri-color service. To me, this is the best of all hair color services. It seems to give the most natural effect to your hair color. When both are done, it's best to highlight the top a little more heavily than the lowlights. Also, adding more lowlights underneath will give your hair dimension.

The importance of using a professional colorist
The application of highlights to hair requires skill and experience to achieve the desired effect. An amateur, using non-professional products can make mistakes such as selecting hair sections which are too thick, too thin or poorly spaced on the head which is an unflattering and unnatural look that is not easily remedied with permanent bleaching products. When you attempt to use home hair highlighting kits, most amateurs do not have the skills, training or experience to avoid mistakes that can range from unsightly and unpredictable coloring to over bleaching and chemical “haircuts” or loss of hair

One of the advantages of having your hair professionally colored is having an experienced colorist like myself to consult with when choosing your color. During your consultation I will be able to help you choose a color that accomplishes your style desires while making sure you have a new color that matches your lifestyle, comfort level and match your skin tone and eyes. I will then create with you custom full hair or full foil highlights using the best products to give you a satisfying new look from roots to ends through most of your hair. Using foils, I can also use different tones as well as low-lights to create a natural new look.
