I am blessed to have been exposed to hundreds of different textures and curl types; and I have learned that each unique type has its own personal and individual set of requirements. Curly hair has lots of personality from fine hair with loose curls, to tight curls on coarse hair and everything in between.

The basics for a good cut boil down to understanding how much the hair will shrink and to cut accordingly. Unfortunately, many innocent curls have been scalped because this fundamental but extremely important fact not taken into consideration. The other important factor is layering.

I employ a method in which curly hair is cut dry, paying respect to each individual curl by addressing it where it lives. Most of the time I use sheers, sometimes I use a razor. As you know, conventional wet cuts stretch curls, thereby causing the curls to spring up unpredictably and with unfavorable results when dry.

Layering has a gradual "cascade" effect. I gently cut, working in increments , like sculpting, and constantly review to evaluate how each cut sits on the last one. No thinning or texturing techniques are ever used in this method. Because each curl is allowed to make a full rotation with a smooth, finished end, my clients usually find they can go longer between visits using this technique.
